*What corrections officers carry home—and why their stories deserve to be heard.*

You turn in your equipment. Walk through the last secured door. Get in your vehicle.

The shift is over.

But sometimes, you sit there before turning the key.

Because getting out of the facility and getting the facility out of your head are two different things.

## The part people don’t see

People see the uniform. They hear about the fights, the lockdowns, and the long hours.

They rarely see the officer sitting in the driveway, trying to settle down before walking inside.

The parent who wants to listen to their child but is still replaying something from the shift.

The spouse trying to explain why they’re quiet without unloading every detail of a difficult day.

Sometimes, you don’t know how to put it into words. Sometimes, you’re trying to protect the people you love from what you witnessed.

And sometimes, you’ve spent so much of the day holding everything together that you have very little left when you get home.

You still care. You’re still there.

You’re just carrying something they can’t see.

## Who checks on the officer?

We ask whether the count cleared. Whether the reports are finished. Whether the next shift has enough people.

We need those answers.

We also need to ask:

**“How are you doing after what happened?”**

And mean it.

An officer shouldn’t have to reach a breaking point before somebody notices. A supervisor shouldn’t be expected to support everyone else without having someone they can turn to.

Sometimes, the first step is a quiet conversation with somebody who listens long enough to hear the real answer.

## Why Behind the Wall, Beyond the Game exists

I created Behind the Wall, Beyond the Game because officers deserve a place where their experiences matter.

A place to talk about the job, leadership, training, family, and the things that follow us home. A place to decompress, connect, and remember there is more to us than the uniform.

The officer stories shared here and on the podcast are central to that mission. Those experiences can help another officer find the words they’ve been missing. They can help a family understand the silence. They can give a new officer a perspective that deserves a place in their training.

We can learn from one another without turning somebody’s hardest day into entertainment.

## Your voice belongs here

You don’t need a dramatic story to have something worth saying.

Maybe it’s something you wish you’d known when you started. A lesson you learned about being a spouse or parent while working corrections. Something a supervisor did that made a difficult shift easier.

Maybe it’s simply what helped you keep going.

If you choose to share, leave out names, facility identifiers, and sensitive operational details. Share only what you’re comfortable sharing.

Visit [Behind the Wall, Beyond the Game](https://www.behindthewallbeyondthegame.com/) and open the Story Submission page.

Your experience might help another officer feel understood—and give them a reason to speak up, too.

**Behind the Wall, Beyond the Game.**
**One Team. One Fight. No One Stands Alone.**
